Family mourn wrongly killed Brazilian in London
font size

The family of a Brazilian man mistakenly shot by police at a London underground station retraced his last steps on Wednesday.

The parents of Jean Charles de Menezes and other family members laid flowers outside Stockwell station where he was shot dead in July.

Police mistook him for a suicide bomber - a day after four failed attempts to bomb the London transport system, and a fortnight after bombers killed 52 people.

Inside the underground station, the family angrily counted the number of close-circuit television cameras that might have provided evidence of shooting.

Maria Otone de Menezes, the victim's mother said she felt very sad at the station - calling it unbearable to see. She called the accident a great injustice, and said the policeman who shot her son, as well as the police chief should be arrested and punished.

The police say none of the cameras was working on the morning de Menezes died - a claim the family disputes.

The family will spend about a fortnight in London. Their costs are being paid by the Metropolitan Police.
