Mexico to send humanitarian aid to El Salvador amid hurricane Stan

Mexico will send 200 tons of food and 30 tons of other materials as humanitarian relief to El Salvador which was hit by hurricane Stan, Mexican President Vicente Fox said Thursday.

"Today a plane with 15 tons will take off for El Salvador. In my communication with (Salvadorean) President (Antonio) Saca, he seemed anxious," Fox told the Mexican television.

"There is a harsh situation throughout Central America. We're supporting Guatemala and El Salvador," he said.

Mexico has also offered help for Guatemala in the aftermath of Hurricane Stan, which reached Category One on the 5-category Saffir-Simpson scale.

Guatemala and El Salvador were hit the hardest and have the largest numbers of victims, reports said.

The president said that for the moment there are no plans to send the Mexican army to Central America, yet this idea has not been completely ruled out.

In Mexico, there are also many "critical situations" caused by rain in the southeast of the country, Fox said.
