Iraqi parliament to consider constitutional concession to Sunni Arabs
font size

Iraq's Shiite-Kurd dominated parliament will make a last-ditch effort Tuesday to win Sunni Arab support for the controversial draft constitution due to be put to a referendum on Oct. 15, a Sunni parliament member said on Monday.

The once dominant minority's backing was possible if the constitution was considered simply a provisional document subject to modification in the future, Sunni Arab lawmaker Mishaan al- Juboury told reporters.

"There will be an annex to the draft which will make the constitution similar to an interim one," Juboury said.

On Saturday, Iraq's Sunni Arab leaders vowed to defeat the draft constitution in the referendum by urging Sunnis to vote "No" or boycott the ballot.

The constitution will fail if two thirds of voters in any three of Iraq's 18 provinces reject it in the referendum.
