China's Shenzhou-VI manned spacecraft made a successful landing on October 17 before dawn. Foreign news agencies covered the event by sending back urgent dispatches.
The AFP:
After five days of successful flight China's second manned spacecraft Shenzhou-VI made a safe landing on the ground in the small hours of October 17, which marks a new page in China's commitment to becoming a global space power. This is China's second manned spaceflgiht so far. Shenzhou-V's historic flight in October, 2003 made China the third country after the former Soviet Union and the US to have send men into the space. In the maiden flight in 2003 the lone astronaut Yang Liwei never left his seat in the return cabin or get off his space suit. In striking contrast to that the astronauts on the Shenzhou-VI Fei Junlong and Nie Haisheng entered the orbit cabin from the return cabin, got off their cumbersome space suits and put on ordinary work clothes that make movement more convenient. Entire China is fascinated by the flight and numerous Chinese watched the process on TV. The Chinese government hopes to use the manned spaceflight program to inspire patriotism and foster the interests of people in the vast rural regions on science and technology.
Reuters:
The Shenzhou-VI "returned home" on October 17 after orbiting the earth for five days. The two astronauts reported that they landed safely and were in good condition. The two astronauts completed 76 circles around the earth and they were welcome like heroes after the return. China's grand spaceflight program is implemented with relatively small amount of funds. China makes use of its increasingly reliable Longmarch rockets, which have sent over 50 satellites into their orbits.
The Associated Press:
After five days of flight in orbit the space capsule with two Chinese astronauts in it has made a landing in north China in the dawn of October 17 with the help of parachutes. The flight time of the Shenzhou-VI was much longer than that of Shenzhou-V and was much more complicated. In last week Chinese media launched extensive coverage on it showing the personalized and carefree image of the astronauts, including the somersault of Fei Junlong under zero gravity condition and the floating of the astronauts' food in zero gravity.
DPA (Deutsche Presse Agentur):
China's second manned spaceflight concluded with the safe landing in the wee hours of October 17. Shenzhou-VI's astronauts Fei Junlong and Nie Haisheng completed a series of obviously successful and safe logistic experiments in the space, including transfer from the return cabin to the orbit cabin, change of space suits as well as movements in the two cabins. According to design, these experiments will make ready for future ambitious space walk, docking and space lab plan. The astronauts conducted at least two adjustments on the orbit of the spacecraft while in space.
