Nature: Noodles first made in China
font size

In the latest issue of Nature magazine, archeologists point out that the world's first bowl of noodles came not from Italy but from China.

A bowl of well-preserved yellow noodles was discovered during a recent archeological excavation near the Yellow River in northwest China.

Tests show the noodles have a history of 4,000 years, putting an end to the debate about the originating place of noodles with indisputable evidence. Before this the Italians and Arabs all claimed that their ancestors had invented noodles over 2,000 years ago.

The noodles, found in Qinghai Province, are very thin, only 0.3 centimeter in diameter. They are 50 centimeters long and yellowish, quite similar to today's hand-pulled noodles.
