Chinese State Councilor Chen Zhili called for improving the capacity of independent innovation as he reviewed work in Shanghai hi-tech economic zone this week.

Hi-tech economic zones nationwide should bear the responsibility of driving economic restructuring, helping companies participate in international competition, and raising the capacity of independent innovation of China, she said.

"I wish for the zones to become models of independent innovation for other sectors," she said.

She also voiced her hope that the zones will seize opportunities to grow and cultivate famed brands to take a notch on the world market.
