US backs European efforts over Iran nuclear issue: senior official
font size

US Under Secretary of State Nicholas Burns told reporters on Wednesday that the United States supports EU efforts over Iran's nuclear programme.

"It is very important that Iran return to negotiations and we support the EU-3 on that basis," said Burns.

The European troika, France, Germany and Great Britain, obtained last November Teheran's commitment to suspend its sensitive nuclear activities that could lead to atomic weapons.

This accord has been however broken in August after Iran rejected the European cooperation proposals and resumed uranium conversion program in Ispahan.

The United Nations' International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) adopted on Sept. 24 a resolution warning Iran of a possible referral to the UN Security Council.

The decision showed that Teheran had little support internationally, Burns said, adding "It can't count on traditional allies that it might have counted on in the past. So it seems to us that the Iranians have miscalculated".

"So we hope the Iranians will conclude... that they don't have a lot of countries with them and that the only possible avenue ahead is negotiations. And that will be negotiations with Europe; with France and Britain and Germany." Burns said, noting that the subject was one of the main issues he discussed with French officials during his one-day visit to Paris.
