Ecuadorian archeologists find 1,400-year-old textiles

Ecuadorian archaeologists have found textile samples from the tomb of a dignitary around 600 AD in northeast Quito, local media reported on Thursday.

"This discovery is important because it allows us to examine the technology of AD 600, when people were allowed to weave textiles and make metal objects," said Gina Rosero, a textile restorer of the National Institute of Culture (INPC).

Vinicio Ron, who restores metal at the INPC, said the archeological dig was funded and carried out by the Save Quito Fund, as part of the La Florida project.

According to the two specialists, the textiles were made of natural fiber and cotton woven by hand.

The finds will be exhibited in a museum on the site.

About one month after the original find, gold and other pieces of material have also been found in the grave.
