The Islamic Resistance Movement ( Hamas) said on Sunday that the group is close to reaching a deal with the mainstream Fatah on ending bilateral hostilities.

Hamas spokesman Musheer Al-Masri told reporters that contacts between the two movements would lead to a decision on ending all means of incitement and smear campaigns between the two sides.

Fatah, led by Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, confirmed that dialogues were being held between the two sides, expressing hope that the negotiations would remove all hostility.

Meanwhile, Fatah called on Hamas to sign a deal reached among Palestinian factions last week, which were boycotted by Islamic Jihad (Holy War) and Hamas.

Under the deal, all parties concerned should respect results of the legislative elections slated for Jan. 25 and prohibit the use of arms during the election process.

Hamas presented a tough challenge to Fatah in the latest local elections, and, with a surging street popularity, is poised to fare well in the parliamentary elections.
