Syrian president sends letters to UN Security Council members over Hariri probe
font size

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad sent letters on Sunday to the UN Security Council members following the UN investigation report implicating top Syrian security officials with the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

"President Bashar al-Assad sent letters to Security Council members that relate to the Syrian position over the UN probe," the official SANA news agency said without giving further details of the letter.

The Security Council is scheduled to meet on Tuesday to consider response to the report presented by the chief of the probe Detlev Mehlis to the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on Thursday after five months of investigation.

Damascus has dismissed the UN findings as politically motivated and far from truth.

The United States has urged the Security Council to consider action against Syria for apparent involvement in the killing of

Hariri who died in a huge car bomb blast in Beirut on Feb. 14.

Syria withdrew its troops from Lebanon in late April after 29- year military presence in the wake of massive anti-Syrian protests over Hariri's killing.

Damascus has consistently rejected charge of involvement in the killing.
