The European Union (EU) on Monday congratulated Polish president-elect Lech Kaczynski on winning the presidential election and said the 25-member bloc believes Poland will continue to pursue its policy of European integration.
Jose Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission (EC), the EU's executive body, said in a statement that he was delighted to be able to work with Kaczynski "towards the reforms which will ensure the European Union's fundamental place on the world stage."
"As we face the challenges of globalization, I am sure that we will be able to work together constructively at a time when the European Union requires the engagement of all its members," he said.
Poland had demonstrated its commitment to Europe by bringing about the political and economic reforms necessary for accession to the EU in a short space of time, Barroso said.
An EC spokesman told a regular briefing that Barroso is convinced the new Polish president will continue to play an active role in pushing forward political, economic and social reforms in the country.
The latest ballot results, with more than 90 percent of the votes counted, showed that Warsaw mayor Kaczynski had beaten his rival Donald Tusk in Sunday's presidential election run-off.
Official results are expected late Monday.
