Vietnam eye 6 athletics gold medals at SEA Games

Vietnam have aimed to bring home 6 gold medals in the track-and-field events of the coming Southeast Asian Games slated for December in the Philippines, a local coach said Friday.

"Of the six national athletics records, which have just been made, two are of great importance. They are 4.1 meters made by female pole vaulter Le Thi Phuong, and 4 minutes 19.42 seconds by woman 1,500m runner Truong Thanh Hang," said Duong Duc Thuy, head coach of Vietnam's national athletics team.

At the 23rd SEA (Southeast Asia) Games, four other athletes will try to grab gold medals in men's high jump, men's decathlon, women's high jump and men's marathon, he added. Their best results are 2.18m, 7,199 points, 1.9m and 2h 35'50''6 respectively.

At the 22nd SEA Games held in 2003, hosts Vietnam topped the medal table with 158 golds, 97 silvers and 91 bronzes, far ahead of second-placed Thailand on 90-93-98.
