Top Hong Kong official John Tsang has hailed a revised offer of European Union (EU) to the World Trade Organization (WTO) negotiation on agriculture as a " step forward".
Speaking on a radio talk show here Saturday, Tsang, Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology of Hong Kong Special Administration Region Government, said the offer has shown EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson's efforts, and urged all WTO members to show flexibility, political will and leadership to formulate a credible package.
"Only WTO members reach a consensus on agriculture at the 6th Ministerial Conference (MC6) to be held in Hong Kong in December, can discussions on other subjects be carried out smoothly," he noted.
Tsang said he had visited several WTO members recently and understood their situation better. Being the chairman of the MC6, he said he should be fair and just in negotiations.
He added that any agreements to be reached at the conference will help promote worldwide trade activities, and Hong Kong will also benefits from them.
