First Qomolangma ascent by women marked in Kathmandu

The 30th anniversary of the first successful ascent of the world's highest peak, Mt. Qomolangma by Junko Tabei, a Japanese woman, is being celebrated in Kathmandu amid various program Monday and Tuesday.

According to organizers Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, NTB and Nepal Mountaineering Association in association with various travels trade associations and municipalities are organizing a series of programs during the two-day's event.

A statement issued by NTB said, beside Tabei, Pang Duo, a member of Chinese Expedition who climbed the peak 11 days after Tabei on May 27, 1975, becoming the second woman to achieve this feat will be honored along with Tabei and other women climbers who are coming to attend this gala program are from China, Japan, New Zealand, Slovenia, India, Denmark, England, Ireland, Iran and Nepal.

Tabei and other women mountaineers will be taken to Hanumandhoka Durbar Square from Sahid Gate by horse-driven-carriages, followed by police band and members of various travel trade associations and government officials for civic reception to be given by Kathmandu Metropolis and other municipalities of Kathmandu Valley on Tuesday.

Tabei scaled the summit of Mt. Qomolangma becoming the first woman in the world to achieve this feat on May 16, 1975.

About 100 women from different countries and regions have successfully scaled Mt. Qomolangma within 30 years so far, according to Nepal Mountaineering Association.
