Uruguayan President Tabare Vazquez met the head of a Chinese military delegation, Liang Guanglie, on Monday in Montevideo, with both sides vowing to further friendly ties and cooperation.

Vazquez told his Chinese guests that the Uruguayan government highly regards the development of ties with China, desiring enhanced cooperation in political, economic, cultural, science and technology spheres between the two countries.

He said China is a peace-loving nation and that her development benefits world peace and stability.

The Uruguayan leader reiterated that his government adheres to the one-China policy.

Liang said China and Uruguay have enjoyed good cooperation based on high-level exchanges, deepened mutual trust and steady progress in economic and trade ties since the two countries established diplomatic relations 17 years ago.

The Chinese general mentioned the smooth development of military cooperation between the two sides in recent years, hoping for more exchanges and better ties.

Liang, member of the Central Military Commission and chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, arrived here Sunday after wrapping up a visit to Argentina.

The Chinese military delegation left Beijing last Tuesday for visits to Argentina, Uruguay and Cuba at the invitation of the Argentine Ministry of Defense, the Uruguayan Ministry of Defense and the Cuban Ministry of Revolutionary Armed Forces.
