Russia urges Syria to implement UN resolution
font size

Russia urges Damascus to carry out the UN Security Council resolution adopted on Monday demanding Syria's full compliance with a UN probe into the death of former Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said here on Tuesday.

"I hope the time that Syria has before the Mehlis commission completes its investigation ... will be used by the Syrians to fulfill the terms that this resolution sets," Lavrov said on Rossiya television on Tuesday evening.

The Mehlis commission should do the investigation by December 15 and hand its results over to the Lebanese authorities, the minister was quoted by the Interfax as saying.

The Syrian question has not yet come to the end because "Syria must fulfill the terms that are stipulated by the UN resolution in interviewing its citizens," Lavrov noted.

Moscow supports the Syrian leadership's decision to set up its own commission to investigate allegations that Syrian citizens were involved in assassinating Hariri, he stressed.

The minister described the decision as "right" and "important" that "it should be corroborated in practice by specific and prompt steps".

On Tuesday, the Russian Foreign Ministry in a statement urged Syria to make full-scale responsible cooperation with the international commission in probing the murder of Hariri, saying it is an important prerequisite for easing tension in the Middle East.

Russia believes "the responsible cooperation of Damascus with the commission will help answer the remaining questions in the Hariri case, establish the truth and guarantee the triumph of justice," the ministry said in the statement.
