Moussa arrives in Syria amid international pressure on Damascus
font size

Arab League (AL) Secretary General Amr Moussa arrived here Tuesday evening amid international pressure on Damascus over its alleged role in the killing of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

Moussa is scheduled to hold talks with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara on the pressure Damascus is facing following UN resolution 1636, an informed source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The UN Security Council unanimously adopted the resolution 1636 on Oct. 31, demanding Syria cooperate fully with the UN probe in Hariri's killing, or face possible "further action".

An interim report presented by chief UN investigator Detlev Mehlis on Oct. 20 implicated involvement of Syrian and Lebanese officials in the killing of Hariri in a car bomb blast in Beirut on Feb. 14.

Syria has denied any involvement and dismissed the report as politically motivated, but it has promised to fully cooperate with the probe.

Moussa is currently on a four-nation tour, which had taken him to Saudi Arabia and will take him to Czech and Bahrain.
