Visiting Arab League (AL) Secretary General Amr Moussa said here Tuesday evening that Syria is cooperative with the UN probe into the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
Moussa told reporters upon his arrival that his visit will focus on the current developments following UN resolution 1636 urging for Damascus' full cooperation in the Hariri case probe and the mechanism to carry it out.
He said he would discuss the resolution with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara on Wednesday.
Asked whether the UN investigation committee could question Syrian witnesses in Cairo, Moussa said that he would like to listen to the Syrian side on the developments first, adding "we haven't reach the phase of questioning witnesses."
He, meanwhile, noted that he would pay a visit to Beirut next week.
Chief UN investigator Detlev Mehlis, currently continuing his work in Beirut, made a request through the United Nations to the Syrian government that he wants to question six Syrian officials in Lebanon.
President Assad's brother-in-law, Assef Shawkat, head of Syria's military intelligence, was reportedly on the list that Mehlis intended to question.
Syria has not officially responded, but said it was considering the request.
The UN Security Council unanimously adopted the resolution 1636 on Oct. 31, demanding Syria cooperate fully with the UN probe in Hariri's killing, or face possible "further action".
An interim report presented by chief UN investigator Detlev Mehlis on Oct. 20 implicated Syrian and Lebanese officials in the killing of Hariri in a car bomb blast in Beirut on Feb. 14.
Syria has denied any involvement and dismissed the report as politically motivated, but it has promised to cooperate with the probe.
Moussa is currently on a four-nation tour, which had taken him to Saudi Arabia and will take him to Czech and Bahrain.
