The Indonesian Police said Friday radical militant Azahari Husin was hit by police gunshots during a raid Wednesday, not by suicide bombing as reported earlier.
"Azahari was hit first and had no chance to pull the bomb trigger," police spokesman Brig. Gen. Soenarko told reporters at the police headquarters here.
He added Azahari was wearing a bomb vest during the shoot-out.
The Malaysia-born militant was shot three times in his chest that apparently caused his death, Soenarko said.
After the raid, security officers confiscated 30 bomb devices and a 9-mm FN MD pistol loaded with 10 bullets, he said.
Another militant identified as Arman, however, blew himself up to avoid capture.
The raid took place at a villa in the Batu resort village in the Indonesian town of Malang.
Azahari was suspected brains behind three major bombings in Indonesia since 2002, in which 225 people were killed.
