AU chief commends Liberians for peaceful poll
font size

African Union Commission Chairperson Alpha Oumar Konare on Saturday commended the leaders and people of Liberia for what he describes as an "exemplary and peaceful poll."

In a statement issued from the AU headquarters, Konare said he has followed, with keen interest, the second round of presidential elections held in Liberia this week.

"The poll was yet a further testimony to the resolve of Liberians to turn a new chapter in the history of their long suffering country," the statement said.

Konare also called on the candidates to accept the results of the polls as a clear expression of the will of the people of Liberia and, should they have any complaints or grievances, to channel them through the established mechanism and to strictly comply with the decision emerging therefrom.

In the just-ended Liberia's presidential election, former finance minister Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf defeated football star George Weah, and will become Africa's first ever elected female president, should be certified by November 23.
