MSN is going to launch four new types of online ads in cooperation with Chinese ads agents in order to attract more Chinese ads clients, said Chris Dobson, general manager of digital marketing sales and trade marketing for MSN on November 14.

The four new ads types are: VIR, VOTP, ExSky and B&S, they are regarded to be more popular than traditional ones.

The MSN official said in an interview with International Finance News that China has a great potential in online ads and traditional media ads would face challenge.

MSN's Chinese users reached 7 million six months ago, now the number tops 10 million, or up 50%, said Chris Dobson.

He added that China's online ads volume takes up less than 1% of that of all types of ads, but future volume will increase to 4% or 5%. China has a great potential in online ads as it boasts great broadband facilities.

Tom Bowman, International Advertising Sales Director of MSN, said online ads would grab a large market share from traditional media.

According to reports, Internet ads are posing challenge to traditional media. Some traditional media's circulation volume is decreasing in some developed countries. New York Times has cut 500 employees.

Chris Dobson said that in order to make profit from online ads, Microsoft makes MSN an ads operator. Its current global ads income is 2 billion US dollars, but China only makes up a very small portion of it with majority being taken by Britain, US and Japan.

But Chris Dobson predicts that China may become MSN's third largest market in coming years.

Since this year, China's online ads showed an uptrend. Statistics show that revenues of portal websites like Sina.com and Sohu.com are mainly from online ads.
