The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) on Tuesday suspended Turkish Weightlifting Federation (TWF) from all international events until May 31, 2006. The TWF will also pay the fine of 100,000 US dollars.
At its meeting held in Doha, Qatar, the IWF Executive Board discussed the issue of anti-doping violations by the TWF's athletes and officials, while it provided a hearing to the delegation of the Federation, reported the semi-official Anatolia News Agency.
"The IWF Executive Board acknowledges the achievements of the TWF having organized several international events and its valuable contribution to the weightlifting sport," the IWF said.
TWF Chairman Hasan Akkus said that they could not attend the upcoming European Men's Weightlifting Championships and the World Youth Championships due to the suspension.
It is reported that Turkey proposed to host next European Men's Weightlifting Championships and the Mediterranean Cup in 2008.
