Australia wins penalty shootout 4-2 to qualify for 2006 World Cup

Australia has won penalty shootout 4-2 against Uruguay to qualify for 2006 World Cup in Germany Wednesday night.

The match was held at Telstra Stadium in Sydney, Australia's largest city, with a sell-out crowd of more than 80,000 people watching.

In the first half, Australia took the lead after Marco Bresciano scored the goal after some smart lead-up work from Harry Kewell, who had just come onto the field as a substitute.

Australia was attempting to qualify for their first World Cup finals in more than 30 years when they met the South American side in a second leg play-off at Sydney's Telstra Stadium.

Uruguay defeated Australia 1-0 in last week's clash in Montevideo.

The Australian team needs at least a two-goal winning margin to qualify for Germany next year, with aggregate scores over the two legs deciding the tie.

Wednesday's match went into the 30 minutes extra time and then into a penalty shootout after playoff tied 1-1 on aggregate.

Australia finally won 4-2 on penalties.
