Chinese President Hu Jintao met in Busan Friday with Donald Tsang Yam-kuen, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting.

During a breakfast, Tsang briefed President Hu on Hong Kong's latest social and economic developments as well as the opinions from Hong Kong's various circles on the HKSAR government's constitutional development plan.

The Chinese president said the central government will continue to give full support to the HKSAR chief executive and the HKSAR government's governance according to law.

Hu said the chief executive's achievements in putting forward the administrative concept of "strong governance for the people," uniting various circles and promoting social harmony and development, are well recognized.

Hu said Hong Kong's economy continues to maintain the momentum of strong growth while local residents and international investors have growing confidence in the prospects of Hong Kong's economic development.

Hu called on the Hong Kong community to grasp the opportunity to quicken the pace of development and promote the social common consensus of harmonic development.

"It is the central government's consistent policy to support the HKSAR in its efforts to develop its democratic system which suits its own practice by means of following the law and advancing step by step," said the Chinese president.

The Chinese president and the HKSAR chief executive are in South Korea's southeastern port city of Busan for the annual APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting, which opens on Friday.
