Indonesian police deny terror funding by foreign diplomat
font size

Indonesian Police on Monday dismissed media reports saying that a foreign diplomat has channeled funds to local terror groups.

"There is no known diplomat who has channeled such funds," National Police Chief Sutanto said at the parliament compound here.

But Sutanto, who was attending a hearing with legislators, admitted that the recent bombings in Indonesia had been carried out by an international terror network.

He told reporters later that an Indonesian migrant worker in Saudi Arabia has channeled fund to finance attacks in the Philippines.

"The fund was channeled by a courier to finance bombings in the Philippines," Sutanto said. He didn't explain further about the bombings, citing the migrant worker by initials ALS.

"We will work together with the Philippine and Thai polices to uncover the group," he said without explaining why Thailand was mentioned.

Sutanto said local terror groups are lacking of financial sources and "running business" to get the money, adding that the militants sell pre-paid cellular phone cards and rob banks to raise funds.

Similarly, Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Yuri Thamrin said there is no evidence that a foreign diplomat has involved in terror funding in Indonesia.

"This is a very sensitive issue... we cannot accuse somebody without evidence," he was quoted by the Antara news agency as saying.
