Malaysia has signed an additional protocol with the International Atomic Energy Agency ( IAEA), further demonstrating its commitment to the non- proliferation of nuclear weapons, local authorities said Wednesday.

The two sides signed the Protocol Additional to the Agreement for the Application of Safeguards in connection with the Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons on Tuesday in Vienna, Austria, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The protocol aims at enabling countries which have a safeguard agreement with the IAEA to improve the efficiency of safeguards system, the ministry said in a statement released here.

Malaysian Ambassador to Austria Rajmah Hussain, who is also resident representative of Malaysia to the IAEA, and Director General of the IAEA Mohamed El Baradei signed the document.

Malaysia is the 106th nation to sign the additional protocol, the ministry added.
