Singapore to implement recommendations on genetic testing and research

The Singapore government has accepted 22 recommendations on genetic testing and research made by the Bioethics Advisory Committee, Channel NewsAsia reported Friday night.

While testing for genetic disorders is permitted in the city state, any test aiming to alter a gene is not allowed, even if it seeks to get rid of a disorder, the report said.

Getting a sample tissue from a person for genetic testing without his or her knowledge is considered non-consensual or deceitful, and no tissue should be transacted on a commercial basis in Singapore.

Attaching importance to the protection of participants' rights and confidentiality, the recommendations aim to provide researchers with clear directions on genetic testing and research.

Building on existing guidelines on biomedical research, the recommendations are expected to be implemented immediately, the report said.

In Singapore, hospitals and research institutes also set up Institutional Review Boards to supervise biomedical research.
