Motorola's R&D investment in China tops $500 mln

After nearly twenty years of development China has become one of Motorola's R&D bases in the world. Motorola's R&D investment in China has exceeded $500 million, boasting 16 R&D centers and over 2,000 R&D personnel, according to ourgame.com.

According to Zhuang Jing, director of Motorola China Research and Development Institute, Motorola's main research areas in China include advanced and environment protection material research, software development, mobile end-product R&D, network equipment, auto electronic products, application of human-machine interaction technology in future software and hardware products, battery and other electronic product accessories etc. By September 2005, Motorola has submitted over 3,400 patent applications in China, taking the leading position in this respect.

Zhuang Jing said: "Motorola's R&D in China serves not only its Chinese market, but also the global market. Products and technologies developed in China have become one of the key factors in boosting Motorola's global business". For years Motorola China has been conducting R&D programs together with Chinese research institutions and universities. By far Motorola has launched more than 30 technological cooperation programs with over 20 Chinese research institutions and universities.

Motorola and Beijing University of Technology have just started a cooperation program to study on handling of electronic product and electric appliance scraps. Xia Zhidong, associate professor at Beijing University of Technology said: "By cooperation with Motorola in research and development (we) can introduce leading equipment and technologies in the world. (We) will conduct relevant researches based on the concept of sustainable development with the purpose of reducing cost and energy consumption as well as avoiding pollution and raising profits."
