Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has ordered to set up an independent body to investigate the case of a woman, believed to be a Chinese national who was made to do squats in the nude in a police station here, a local newspaper said Tuesday.
Badawi announced the plan before reporters at the Royal Malaysian Air Force base on his return from Maltam, where he was attending the Commonwealth Head of Government Meeting, the News Straits Times said.
The prime minister he was considering member candidates for the proposed body, the newspaper said.
The prime minister's decision received overwhelming support from non-government organizations and politicians, it said.
The move will placate growing demands for a thorough and transparent probe into the case that has become an embarrassment for the police and the country, the paper said.
