Malaysia to propose ways to curb haze at ASEAN Summit
font size

Malaysia will propose several alternatives to the existing burning method of forest clearing, which was blamed for causing the annual haze in ASEAN countries, during the 11th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur from Dec. 12 to 14.

Malaysian Natural Resources and Environment Minister Adenan Satem said on Friday that one proposal was to use the latest technology in farming.

The countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations ( ASEAN) needed to worked together to prevent haze which had caused severe environmental pollution and losses to regional economies, Adenan told an international environmental meeting held in Malaysia.

Malaysia was also prepared to give assistance to any ASEAN country that might need technical aid to overcome the haze problem.

The haze problem tortured some ASEAN countries each year. The Malaysian government was forced to declare a haze emergency on Aug. 11 this year in two areas in Klang Valley as the haze, which was brought by wind from Indonesia due to the burning for forest clearing, threatened the health of people.
