Kazak president pledges more support for SCO
font size

Kazakhstan will continue its support for the the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and work as always with its other member countries to promote the progress of the regional group, said President Nursultan Abishevich Nazarbayev on Monday.

He made the remarks while meeting with SCO's Secretary General Zhang Deguang. A SCO mission led by Zhang has worked as an observer to the Sunday presidential election in the country.

Nazarbayev praised the SCO mission, saying that it was an important guarantee to a just, fair and open presidential poll.

Zhang, for his part, said the election results showed that Nazarbayev enjoyed a great prestige among the Kazak people. Nazarbayev swept to victory and was re-elected to a seven-year term with 91 percent of the vote in Sunday's poll.

Zhang said a success in the election, which was carried out in compliance with the Kazak constitution and relevant laws, is conducive to the country's further development as well as regional peace and stability.

The SCO delegation started its observation of the Kazak presidential elections on Nov. 27. The SCO, comprising China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, has sent delegations to observe elections in Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Mongolia.
