The UN Security Council on Wednesday condemned Eritrea's decision to expel some members of the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE), and urged Eritrea to reverse its decision without preconditions.
In a presidential statement read out by British Ambassador Jones Parry, whose country holds the rotating Presidency for the month of December, the Council condemned the decision of the Eritrean government, and unequivocally demanded that Eritrea immediately reverse its decision without preconditions.
The Council also demanded that Eritrea reverse all restrictions imposed on the operation of UNMEE, and promised to keep consulting on how to respond to this completely unacceptable action by Eritrea.
According to UN officials, Eritrea said in a letter sent to the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea that the Americans, Canadians and Europeans have 10 days to leave the Horn of Africa nation.
