The Uzbek authorities has begun trials of 114 people over a revolt in the eastern city of Andijan in May, the country's Supreme Court said Wednesday.

A total of 78 civilians are accused of taking part in terrorist acts in Andijan, said reports from the Uzbek capital of Tashkent.

In the meantime, 36 members of the security services, including police and soldiers, are charged with failing to prevent a series of attacks on government installations in the city.

On Nov. 14, the Supreme Court sentenced 15 men who played major roles in the unrest to 14 to 20 years in prison. They had been accused of terrorist attacks, violation of the constitution, murder and hostage-taking.

The Andijan unrest broke out on the evening of May 12 with a jail break that freed 23 local businessmen who had been detained for religious extremism, along with hundreds of other prisoners.

After quelling the riot, the Uzbek government said that among all the deaths were 96 religious extremists, 60 civilians and 31 security guards and soldiers.
