The European Union (EU) summit on Friday condemned Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad over his controversial remarks on Israel, said a declaration issued by the summit.
"The European Council condemns unreservedly President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's call for the eradication of Israel and his denial of the holocaust," said the declaration obtained by Xinhua on Friday from an EU source.
"These comments are wholly unacceptable and have no place in civilized political debate," said the document.
The EU summit, in its second day, was striving to strike a deal on the 2007-2013 budget plan. On Friday the meeting issued declarations, or Council Conclusions in the EU's jargon, on the Middle East.
EU leaders said in November that the UN General Assembly, of which Iran is a member, adopted by consensus a resolution which "rejects any denial of the Holocaust as an historical event either in full or in part," urging all member states to educate their population about the tragedy.
Iran was called on by the EU summit to join the international consensus on the need for a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israel conflict, to support the pursuit of peace by Israel and its neighbors and to oppose groups which advocate or use violence.
The EU summit also dealt with Iran's nuclear issue.
"The European Council is gravely concerned at Iran's failure to build confidence that its nuclear program is exclusively peaceful, " said the document.
The EU leaders are to warn that "whether the EU's long-term relationship with Iran improves or deteriorates will depend on progress on all issues of concern," said the document.
Earlier on Wednesday, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad termed the Holocaust as a "myth" created by Europe to establish a Jewish state in the Middle East, renewing his call for Israel to be removed from the region.
