Pollutant water approaches Sino-Russian Border

The pollutant slick in the Songhua River has reached the Tongjiang section where the Songhua joins the Heilong River bordering China and Russia.

Nitrobenzene was found in Tongjiang at noon Thursday and by 6 a.m. Friday its was measured at a concentration of 0.0456 mg per litre, according to a report by China's State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA) Friday.

The report said that the chemical density was 0.1694 mg per liter in the Fujin section, 65 km upstream of Tongjiang, at 3 p.m.Thursday, when it had peaked and began to decline.

China has moved its Songhua River pollution control headquarters to Tongjiang city and Chinese and Russian experts are sampling water from the Heilong River, said the SEPA.
