Man arrested over attempted attack in London

A 23-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the attempted bombings of London's transport network on 21 July.

Anti-terror detectives detained the man as he left a plane at Gatwick airport, south of London, early Tuesday morning after flying in from Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia.

The arrest of the unidentified man, from Tottenham, north London, was made on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism under the Terrorism Act 2000.

He is not thought to have been present at the time of the failed terror attacks on July 21, but is suspected of having provided logistical support to would-be bombers.

Five men have been charged with conspiracy to murder following the failed attacks on London's transport network, while 10 others face lesser charges including failing to disclose information about the suspects and assisting them to evade arrest.

The failed July 21 attack came two weeks after the devastating July 7 bombings, in which four suicide bombers killed 52 passengers on the London transport network.

In another development against terrorist attack, an Algerian man with suspected al-Qaida links was sentenced to six years of imprisonment in Northern Ireland for downloading information on how to blow up a passenger jet.
