Stromatolites, one of the oldest creature fossils, dating back up to 400 million years old, were discovered by Chinese researchers in Tongzi county, Guizhou Province. This is so far the fifth place in the world that such fossil was discovered.
Stromatolites, known as one of the oldest fossils on the earth dating back some 1.8 billion years, are colonial structures formed by photosynthesizing cyannobacteria and other microbes. They were first discovered in Australia's Pilbara Region.
The discovery of the fossil in Tongzi county is of great significance in geological history, this is also the first time that stromatolites were found in south China.
