Israel launches airstrike on Lebanon in response to rocket attack
font size

Israeli warplanes struck a Palestinian militant training base south of the Lebanese capital Beirut early Wednesday, hours after rockets were fired from Lebanon on two northern Israeli border towns.

The training camp belongs to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).

The spokesman for the PFLP in Lebanon announced that two members of the group were lightly wounded in the air strike.

Meanwhile, an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson said that the airstrike "is in response to the firing of projectile rockets last night toward Israeli communities."

At least four rockets fired from Lebanese territory hit Israeli towns close to the border on Tuesday night, causing damages to houses but no casualties.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

The IDF said, however, that any attack on the northern border emanating from Lebanon is carried out on the initiative of Hezbollah, which has sole control in southern Lebanon.

But Hezbollah and PFLP have denied any connection to the attack.

IDF northern front commander Udi Adam was quoted Wednesday as saying that Israel army knew which Palestinian faction was behind the attack, but did not elaborate, Israel Radio reported.

"I hope the other side understands the message of the IDF strike," Adam said, adding that "Otherwise, the IDF will continue to help it understand."

Asked if Israel will also bomb Syrian targets as it has done in the past when rockets have been fired by groups backed by Damascus, Adam said that "I won't answer that ... we reserve the right to retaliate anyway we see fit."

The airstrike launched by Israel this time was the deepest in Lebanon since June 2004.
