Haiti's interim government on Sunday confirmed in a statement that the general elections set for Jan. 8 would be postponed again, according to reports reaching Havana from the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince.
This was the fifth time for the elections to be pushed back and the statement did not give a new date for the poll, the first since former president Jean Bertrand Aristide was oustered from office in early 2004.
A member with the country's Provisional Election Council (CEP) said on Friday that the vote would not be held on time.
According to sources close to the electoral council and the interim government, a first round of the vote was now being considered for Feb. 7.
Preparatory work for the poll is still trapped in a state of disarray, and many registered voters have not received their electoral identification cards.
Meanwhile, the interim government of the impoverished Caribbean nation also failed to properly address its security problems, as violence and kidnapping have continued plaguing Haiti since Aristide fled the country.
