Chinese player Gu Li wins major title in China-Japan Go tournament
font size

Chinese Go player Gu Li beat his Japanese rival Yuta Iyama in the 7th China-Japan Ahan Tongshan Cup (known as Agon Kiriyama Cup in Japan) Dual Meet and claimed the title on Tuesday.

Gu took white and used an hour and 25 minutes to upset Yuta, a Japanese champion and one of the youngest players to become a professional Go player in Japan.

"Although Yuta lost the game this time, it is obvious that he is a player with great talent," said Gu.

This is the second time for Gu Li to win the cup. Last year in the fifth edition, he became the first Chinese to win the title.

The China-Japan Ahan Tongshan Cup features a simple knockout format. The champion prize this year is 5 million Japanese yen (about 45,000 US dollars).

Japan had won in the first four Ahan Tongshan Cup tournaments and China won the following three.
