font size

Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said that six Australian policemen are believed to be killed in a bus crash on the wet highway between Cairo to Alexandria in Egypt Wednesday.

"One of two buses which were carrying Australian police and emergency services workers who were on holiday crashed on the road, also injuring 24 others," Downer said, adding, "We can now confirm that there were six people killed in that crash and 24 others injured."

"We assume that those who were killed and injured were Australians or were largely Australians, and one of those killed is believed to be a child. " he added.

None of the injured was believed to be in a life-threatening condition.

"It's a very tragic situation and my Ministry and our ambassador in Cairo will continue to do everything they can to assist," he said.
