Spain has effectively implemented its rigorous anti-bird flu measures, the World Health Organization (WHO) said in a report quoted by Spain's presidential office on Wednesday.
At the 7th meeting of the Bird Flu Intelligence and Tracking Commission, representatives of Spain gave their evaluations of the bird flu situation in Spain, following recent new cases in Turkey.
Spain would keep maintaining its embargo on poultry products from countries hit by bird flu and their neighbors, strengthening vigilance at the borders and taking all preventative measures to safeguard citizens' health, Spanish authorities said.
The environment ministry said that it would increase its monitoring of migratory bird movements, to prevent avian flu from breaking out during the spring migration period in Spain.
At the meeting, Spanish health authorities said they were in constant touch with the WHO and the European Union.
The H5N1 strain has killed more than 70 people since 2003. Most of the victims had close contact with fowls.
Fears heightened this month when two people died in Turkey, the first victims outside Asia.
