For the general category, the top ten phrases are: education to maintain the advanced nature of Party members, Eleventh Five-Year Plan, Shenzhou-VI, conservation-conscious society, peaceful development, basket of currencies, oil price hike, One World One Dream, Lien Chan and James Soong's mainland visits and abolishing of agricultural tax.

Top ten catchwords were picked as well for each of the other seven categories, namely, domestic affairs, international affairs, economics, science and technology, education, sports, culture and entertainment. Announced at the same time were catchwords for the Hong Kong/Macao topic and clean government topic.

The selection of Ten Catchwords was the results of tracking studies of 15 newspapers such as People's Daily in 2005, covering about 500 million characters in the 15 newspapers published from Jan.1 to Dec.31, 2005.

The 15 newspapers selected based on factors such as circulation, media value, readership, distribution location, distribution cycle and coverage etc. are (in alphabetical order of Chinese spelling): Beijing Youth Daily, Beijing Daily, Beijing Evening News, Legal Daily, Guangming Daily, Guangzhou Daily, Huaxi Metropolitan News, Global Times, Tianjin Evening News, Southern Weekend, People's Daily, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily, Yangcheng Evening News, Yangtse Evening Post and China Youth Daily.
