A senior official urged the departments concerned to take measures for maintaining public order, in an aim to build a harmonious society Friday in Beijing.
Luo Gan, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remark at a national meeting on maintaining public security.
"Governments at various levels have implemented relevant polices and regulations to safeguard public order in 2005, which maintained social stability and enhanced people's sense of security", he said.
"To build a peaceful and stable society is an important task for this year and the coming years," he said.
He stressed more efforts to root out unstable factors for public security with prudence and patience, and try to prevent crimes from their origins.
He called on local governments to attach importance to the public security during the Spring Festival and to ensure a peaceful Spring Festival season for the people.
On the meeting major tasks for maintaining social security in 2006 were outlined.
