French Environment Minister Nelly Olin said here Tuesday that France will commit itself to cut greenhouse gases under the Kyoto Protocol.
France is "in good position as far as the Kyoto Protocol is concerned," Olin said, adding: "These figures are extremely encouraging for our climate policy. France is under its 1990 level. "
A report made by the London-based Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) last month warned that France, Greece and Germany, would hit their Kyoto targets only if they successfully carried out planned policies.
France produced 562.6 million tons of greenhouse gases in 2004, compared with 567.1 tons in 1990.
The 1997 Kyoto treaty on climate change sets legally binding targets for developed countries to curb emissions of carbon dioxide and other gases blamed for global warming by 2008-2012, compared with 1990 levels.
