Thailand will display a set of classical performances, characterized by the "Khon" mask plays, in Paris and Lyon this September to celebrate the kingdom's friendly ties with France as well as the 60-year anniversary of King Bhumibol Adulyadej's ascending the throne.
As part of the "Thai Culture in France Festival" to be held in Paris and other French cities, the Khon has been given paramount importance by the French government as it is considered the highest form of Thai classical drama, Khunying Tipawadee Meksawan, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Culture of Thailand, said Tuesday.
The presentation of the Khon in France would be adjusted for the better understanding, enjoyment, and appreciation of sold-out international audiences, she was quoted by Thai News Agency as saying.
Thai folk dances "Hun Lakhon Lek" or traditional Thai small puppets, classical and contemporary music are among other Thai cultural offerings to be presented in the festival, co-sponsored by Thailand's Ministry of Culture and the France's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Thai local products under the government's One Tambon, One Product (OTOP) scheme will also be on sale at the event.
The show will not only publicize Thai culture but also help promote Thailand as a land for tourism, trade and investment, said Khunying.
