China attaches great importance to and has played an active role in the international cooperation on bird flu prevention and control, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Wednesday in Beijing.

China has reported its avian and human influenza cases to the concerned international organizations and countries according to the principle of timeliness, openness and transparency, and sponsored and attended a series of international meetings on bird flu prevention and control, he said.

China has also provided within its capacity capital, material and technical assistance to the neighboring countries to help in their efforts to fight bird flu, Wen told the ongoing International Pledging Conference on Avian and Human Influenza.

Describing bird flu prevention and control as a long-term, arduous task, the premier said it needs not only the "unremitting efforts" of all countries concerned, but also closer cooperation of the international community.
