Argentina supports restrictive surveillance of Iran's nuclear program

Argentina supports restrictive surveillance of Iran's nuclear program, as proposed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) , the country's Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.

Argentina based its stance on the nuclear non-proliferation treaty and the diplomatic steps undertaken by Germany, France, Britain and the United States, the ministry said in a statement.

The statement also added that Argentina supports international agreements which promote the use of nuclear energy for peaceful means.

"The fulfillment of international agreements against the proliferation of nuclear arms and for nuclear disarmament is a contribution by all states towards maintaining international peace and security," it said.

Iran resumed its nuclear research work early this month which had been suspended for more than two years, incurring widespread condemnation and the referral attempt by the European Union (EU) and the United States to the UN Security Council.

On Tuesday Iran called on the EU trio of France, Germany and Britain to resume talks on its nuclear dispute, but it got a cool response from Britain.
