Iran condemns French president's remarks on use of nuclear weapons
font size

Iran on Saturday condemned French President Jacques Chirac's recent remarks on the use of nuclear weapons against terrorism, terming them as unacceptable and unconventional, the official IRNA news agency reported.

"The unconventional claims by Chirac on the use of nuclear arms under the pretext of preventing terrorism are unacceptable," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi was quoted as saying.

Asefi said that Chirac's comments had made the world public opinion more fearful, adding the French president had "revealed the inherent intentions behind of nuclear powers is using this leverage for political games".

"The bitter and unpleasant experience of the use of nuclear weapons in the world war had been so catastrophic that their re- application will not at all be acceptable or justifiable," said the spokesman.

Chirac said on Thursday at a nuclear submarine base in northwestern France that his country would be ready to use nuclear weapons against any state which launched a terrorist attack against France.

The United States accuses Iran of developing nuclear weapons secretly, but Iran denies the charge as politically motivated, saying that it strongly opposes the use and storage of nuclear weapons.
