font size

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice asserted Thursday to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas that Washington supports his policies, revealed Palestinian Presidency spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeinah.

Abu Rudeinah said in press statements from West Bank city of Ramallah that Rice phoned Abbas and praised what she called the Palestinian democracy while talking about the Palestinian parliamentary elections held on Wednesday.

According to Abu Rudeinah, Rice "asserted to Abbas that the U.S. administration will continue supporting the elected president ( Abbas) and his policies."

Meanwhile, Abbas held in al-Muqatta in Ramallah a meeting of members of his Fatah movement's central and executive committees to discuss the parliamentary election's results.

The meeting came following the initial results that announced that the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) achieved an overwhelming victory in the election that held in the Palestinian territories on Wednesday.

According to official sources closed to Abbas, the Palestinian leader is expected to address a speech to the nation on Thursday evening after the Central Election Commission (CEC) announces the final official results of the election.
